This is another part of the message when moving across borders.
If you are taking anything across the border, particularly
expensive jewellery, a fur coat, cameras or laptop, it is a good
idea to have it recorded at the border and get a CANADIAN customs
form showing that the item was yours in Canada. Having the bill
of sale with you is another good idea.
In the case of moving between two points in Canada but travelling
through the US, it is a minefield because properly, the Canadian
guy is supposed to look at everything which could/should mean
unloading the trailer at the border.
THEN, you find that they will only give you the re-entry
card/permit for items with serial numbers.
Better not to move through the states if you can avoid it. On
the other hand, I have done the border at St Stephen, NB/Calais,
Maine and driven across the US to Vancouver a couple of times.

and a further note from someone in a slightly different situation
several years ago but similar requirements. When moving a U-Haul
full of my husband's stuff from Nova Scotia to Alberta, but
traveling through the US. we had been advised to get Canada
Customs to stamp all the stuff. We had to be EXTREMELY insistent
with the official when we were exiting New Brunswick, because he
absolutely did not want to get out of his chair. He said, "Well,
the only way I could verify the contents of your trailer would be
to look at everything myself." Yes, we thought, that is why your
uniform says Canada Customs and you are officiating at this
booth. We actually left the office because he didn't want to
bother, and returned three times before driving across the
border, to insist he stamp our list.

A reader who has been there and done that suggests that the US
Customs stamp every page of your list.
Note though that if you have been away more than five years,
you do not need to have owned the item for six months. You can
buy something the day before you move but you have to have "used"
it.
Thanks Britt.
Hello David,
Having recently moved from Canada to the US and back (due to
unforseen circumstances), maybe I can add some useful
information.
If this is a U-Haul/Budget do-it-yourself move , make sure that
the US border officials put their stamp on every page of the
inventory. This will be helpful when returning to Canada,
because Canada Border Services might want to see how long you
have had the furniture/personal items. Coming back to Canada,
you have to be able to prove you've owned AND used everything for
at least 6 months (this rule applies when being outside Canada
for more than a year and less than 5 years). See their website
for details:
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/eservices/bis/bis111-e.html
Before moving back, I contacted the Agency a few times,
everyone was very helpful and the information provided was
accurate.
Good luck!
B xxxx

QUESTION:
I got my TN visa a few days ago. Since I will stay in New
York at least one
year, I plan to move most of my furniture to USA. The
question is: do I need
file any forms when I transport these furnitures across the
border? Should I
pay any duties on them?
Thank you very much.
-------------------------------------------------
david ingram replies:
Make a very detailed list of what you have, make an extra
three copies, and
have it with you when you cross the border with the furniture
if doing a
Budget or U-Haul Truck deal.
If having a moving company do it for you, give them the
paperwork and a copy
of your visa.
There will not be any duty because you are taking it with
you. Keep the
list for your return to Canada.
