QUESTION:
Hi,
I have Registed (not Incorporated) company in Ontario with address in
Ontario. My wife works in Montreal, Quebec, due to that I will travel (as to
say live in Montreal around 70% of my time) between Montreal and Toronto. As
mine is Registed company where I have to pay taxes?
Please let me know ASAP.
Thanks
Kumar

david ingram replies:
In Canada, we pay tax for the most part in the province where we "live". It
sounds like you have two residences and spend 70% of your time in Montreal
and should likely pay your tax to Quebec and this is likely true if your
business does not have a fixed base in Ontario but just sort of wanders
around with you.
However, if your business was an insurance agency, service station, store,
barber shop, or other fixed base location in Ontario, you are supposed to
file a multi-jurisdiction return and pay tax to Ontario on the profits from
that business to Ontario.
And, because the tax is lower in Ontario, you may wish to file as a resident
of Ontario and your wife file as a resident of Montreal.
