I realized that I did not answer the PTIN part of your question about an author wanting to appear and speak in the United States.
An ITIN is fairly simple to get. You ned to fill in a
W-7 form and either go to a US Embassy or Consulate or drive across the border to a Social Security Office in a border town. I have attached a pdf fillable form and instructions for you.
