QUESTION:
I've been living in the U.S. for the past 17 months on a TN visa. Have met a man through work and we are thinking of getting married. (didn't know him before I moved here ..we met AFTER I moved here)
As I am losing my job here (and I suppose in theory my TN status) would I have to LEAVE the US and then
come back or could we get married and then apply for a change in my status?
It would be a real pain to have to leave and then come back.
Thanks!

This is going out to a larger list (with your name removed) and on eofhte other immigration people may wnat to contradict me or add to the advice. If so, I will be happy to pass on more information with credit.
"Off the record" so as not to upset US immigration, I would go and get married tomorrow and have your husband sponsor you for resident alien status from within the country. You sound like a great addition to the US economy and a further example of the brain drain from Canada.
If you were to leave the country, it could take you a year or two to get back.
If you do not get married right away, you are in violation of your status and subject to arrest and deportation
Better to marry while you are still working and not in violation of your status.
You could enroll for University or college coursesa an dstay longer as a J visa student but that would be further complicated because of J restrictions.
Get married, live happily ever after.
