HI,
I am a Canadian citizen by birth and my two children are US citizens by birth. I was wondering what it would take to make them dual citizens and what the benefits and risks are?
Thank-you,

david ingram replies:
There are NO disadvantages to your children affirming their Canadian citizenship. It gives them the right to live in Canada any time they choose. If they ended up in bad health 40 years from now and ran out of US medical benefits, they could move to Canada even if they had never lived here. Get them their citizenship as shown below.
In reverse, the same is true with one BIG BIG BIG disadvantage. A US citizen has to prepare their US tax returns for life no matter where they live and no matter where their income comes from. So, if a child is born in Canada to US parents, the child has to file US and Canada tax returns for life even if they never live in the US.
If you are / were a Canadian at their birth, then they are also Canadian. You have to register them at a Canadian Consulate office or Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

      Born Outside Canada
      to a Canadian Parent
Is your parent Canadian? Were you born outside Canada? Are you a Canadian who had a child outside Canada?

      Born Outside Canada after
      February 14, 1977
      You are a Canadian Citizen
You are a Canadian citizen if you were born outside Canada and:
a.. you were born after February 14, 1977; and
b.. you had a parent who was Canadian at the time of your birth.
Was your parent also born outside Canada to a Canadian parent?
If your Canadian parent was also born outside Canada to a Canadian parent, (your grandparent), you may need to take steps to keep your citizenship. You need to take these steps before you turn 28 years old. If you do not take these steps, you could lose your Canadian citizenship. This is true even if you are living in Canada.
Find out about keeping your Canadian citizenship in the brochure Retention of Citizenship. Use the worksheet to find out if retention applies to you. If you are ready to make an application to retain, go to the Application to Register and Retain Canadian Citizenship.
Find out about proving your Canadian citizenship.
      Born Outside Canada Between
      January 1, 1947 and February 14, 1977
Were you born outside Canada between January 1, 1947 and February 14, 1977? If one of your parents was Canadian at the time of your birth, you may be able to become a Canadian citizen.

Hope this helps
