Permanent Resident Status in both US and Canada

QUESTION:
I am a 39 year old German Citizen who has been living in the US for the last 34 years. I have a green card which allows me to work in the US. I am married to an American and have 2 children who have dual German/American citizenship.
My family and I would like to emigrate to Canada via the skilled worker immigration program. If I apply and receive permanent resident status in Canada, would I lose my Green Card in the US? Would there be a way of retaining this status in case I wanted to live in Canada and still do some work in the US (or return to the US if things did not work out)?
Thank you,
P

If you leave the US BEFORE getting your US citizenship, you will live to regret it.
Get your US citizenship started. You should be able to get it within a year.. THEN apply to come to Canada. If you decide you do not want to stay here, you can return to the US at will.
It is possible to apply for and get a returning resident permit which has to be renewed every year. The longest I have ever seen one renewed was 8 years. Usually, you would be lucky to get three years and then you would have to go back to the US (always at a very inconvenient time) to keep the green card alive.
You could, of course, do something like move to Detroit and work in Windsor or something like that and try and keep the best of both worlds.
I suggest that you (and your wife) do an hour phone consultation with me and explore the possibilities. It will cost you $350 Canadian but would be money well-spent if you are considering such a move.
You also have to realize that Canada's income tax is not that much higher when the incomes are relatively equal between husband and wife. However, if, as i suspect, you are the major breadwinner in your family, a single wage earner in Canada can make an $8,000 difference in tax.
Hope this helps. My contact numbers are below.
