Hi David,
My Wife and I, both American citizens are considering moving to Canada.
I believe we would like to get permanent resident cards? To do this what
is required of us? I am 38 and she is 33, we would sell our home in the
U.S. so we would have $125k U.S. dollars. I do have some relatives how
are Canadian and live in Canada, Aunts & Uncle's etc.
How long does it take to be approved, and how long do we have after
approval before we have to move? If we decide not to move to Canada
after approval, does that affect future chances to relocate? Once a
resident of Canada would there be any problem in returning to the U.S.?
We have no criminal records, and just love Canada. How should we get the
process started?
Thank you David,
Ron

Start by going to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/assess/Education.asp and fill in the self-assessment guide.
If you or your spouse get 67 points, you qualify and it should take about 18 months at this moment.
If you are short points, you might be able to top it up by finishing a degree, taking French Immersion or having a job offer.
Of course, if you have a degree (engineer geologist, pharmacist and another 60 occupations) , you might be able to come in 24 hours under NAFTA.
If you have special skills and have a job offer, a Canadian employer can also sponsor you but start with the self-assessment first.
You can move back to the US at any time. And if you apply and then do not go through with it, nothing untoward will happen now or in the future.
You can go to the Government website and wander around and find all sorts of information that I would just be duplicating.
Goto the gov't site at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.html
Hope this helps. glad to help if you want to go further.
