What you are asking is "how do I have my cake and eat it too?" Return is related to risk, the higher the risk, the greater the possibility of return, the lower the risk, the lower the return. As a general rule, when you are offered a high return with low risk, the reality is that the risk is even higher, because the investment is frequently a scam.
Having said all of the above, there are some options that you may wish to consider. One is in the form of "real return" bonds. The nature of these investments are that they are bonds offered by Government, including the Governments of Canada and of Quebec. The face value of the bond is adjusted annually for inflation, thus your purchasing power is not eroded by inflation. They also pay an annual interest that is competitive with GICs and the like. Your total return is therefore greater than you would receive with a guaranteed product. You can acquire these through a stock broker, or for smaller sums of money, you can acquire the same thing in a mutual fund. The one that I sell most frequently is offered by TD Funds, part of the TD Bank.
Another product that is offered these days is a mutual fund that has a principal guarantee, but the return is tied to the performance of the stock market. You cannot lose your principal in these investments, and can get an above average return, but you are locked in to the contract for some 5 years to be able to call on the guarantee. By contrast, the Real Return Bond fund does not have a lock in feature.
