QUESTION:
I am British by birth. My American father did not marry my mother, and as a
result his name was not entered onto my birth certificate.
When I was aged 39, my father mother swore an affidavit that I was his son.
His name is now entered on my birth certificate.
Am I entitled to American citizenship? I am married with one child aged two.
My father, who married an American, has since died.

Assemble as much more information about your father as you can and apply for a US passport.
If you get the passport, you are a US Citizen. This is a harder process than it was before Sept 11, but you sound like a US citizen to me.
This assumes that you were born after your father had lived in the US for at least 10 years and five of them were after age 14 and you were born after he had established that time in the US. In other words, if you (or anyone else) were born before 1986, and your US citizen parent was only 19 at the time, you could not possibly be a US citizen because your parent had not lived there for 5 years after age 14.
If a person was born after 1986, the US citizen parent only had to have lived in the US for 5 years of which two are after age 14. I do not remember the transition date in 1986 (May something I think and my internet connection is down but if I do not answer this question now, it will not get answered ever because it will just go into the unanswered bunch).
Go to www.centa.com and read the October 1993 newsletter on dual citizenship. It deals with Canada / US dual citizenship but other than Canadian dates, the situation is the same between Great Britain and the US.
By the way, I did not find out that my father was not my father until I was 38. Took another 19 years to track down my biological father and he was dead by then as well.
And last but not least, if you are not going to USE your US citizenship to live and or work in the United States, do NOT pursue it. You will have to continue to file a US tax return every year for the rest of your life if you get a US passport even if you have no US income. I would charge you about 300 pounds Sterling to file that return for you.
Hope this helps.
