QUESTION: My Mother was Canadian. My father American. Can i ask for dual citizenship? since my mother was Canadian? If so how do i Apply. What does this do to my American citizenship?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
david ingram replies:
You are absolutely a Canadian citizen if you were born after 14, 1977. Before that there was a bit of a question because your birth was supposed to be registered before your second birthday. If you get your Candian t, it will havge no effect on your American Citizenship, you will be a dual citizen. Go to www.centa.com and read the October 1993 newsletter about dual citizenship. For more information about dual citizenship.
For more information about how to apply for your citizenship read the CIC pamphlet at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizen/born-e.html
It starts like this:
Were you Born Outside Canada
to a Canadian Parent?
If you were born outside Canada of a Canadian parent, you may be entitled to Canadian citizenship. Current legislation includes transitional provisions which give individuals born outside Canada between 1947 and 1977 to a Canadian parent, the opportunity to apply for Canadian citizenship. These transitional provisions will eventually expire. Therefore, if you are eligible and wish to apply for Canadian citizenship, you should apply soon.
You are eligible if you were:
a.. Born outside Canada (after December 31, 1946 and before February 15, 1977) in wedlock to a Canadian father and your birth was never registered with the Registrar of Canadian citizenship.
b.. Born outside Canada (after December 31, 1946 and before February 15, 1977) out of wedlock to a Canadian mother and your birth was never registered with the Registrar of Canadian Citizenship.
c.. Born outside Canada (after December 31, 1946 and before February 15, 1977) in wedlock to a Canadian mother and a father who was not a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth.

Hope this helps
