The writer of this addition to the newsletter is a world recognized expert
in "anti" money laundering and lectures and travels around the world. You
can see more about the topic and subscribe to his newsletter (free and paid

You will find his resources can help anyone dealing in international money
transactions and he is the only place that I know of that literally deals
with multi-countries. Other sites have been set up that are country

David
I may be able to be of help, particularly bearing in mind the places he
is travelling to / through.
First, it's not the airlines that have / cause the problem: it's
governments. If there is a mismatch between ticket and passport, then -
if immigration spot it - the airline faces up to USD2,000 per sector fine.
US airlines are required to present to the destination immigration a
passenger list whilst the aircraft is in flight - there is a proposeal
in some countries e.g. New Zealand for this to be before the plane takes
off, hence the increasing demand for you to be in the airport long
before flight time - sothat this can be compared against a variety of
watch lists. You will remember Cat Stevens under his adopted Yusof
Mohamed name was the cause of an aircraft from London to somewhere in
the US being diverted to a high security airport just because his name
was similar to that on a watch list, and even internally, one of the
Kennedy's was not permitted to fly from somewhere in the North West to
Washington because there was someone with a similar name on a list.
This is why it is now the usual practice, even on internal flights, to
compare at the boarding gate the boarding pass with a valid identity
document.
He may be able to overcome the issue on a pragmatic basis by explaining
the problem at the check in desk with a copy of his sales invoice and
producing the credit card that it refers to and requesting that his
boarding passes be made out to match the passport.
Both HK and Malaysia are becoming very cautious and ground crew are
receiving strict instructions to report any mismatch, and I can tell you
that they are certainly scrutinising documents carefully.
What is surprising is that your correspondent has a passport which does
not show his correct name. That's far more likely, if spotted, to get
him into trouble and he should short that out before even considering
getting on a plane, I think.
And finally, I hope your correspondent has a fine time in HK, the best
place on the planet and in Malaysia, which is a very pleasant place to
live, work and play.
