Canadian moves to the US and marries American - First

QUESTION: I worked in Canada for the majority of 2005. In October I moved
to the U.S. and got married to a U.S. citizen. I didn't work at all in the
U.S. since I arrived. I am filing Canada tax for 2005 as married, filing
separately. However, they ask for my wife's SIN number and her income.
What do I do?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
david ingram replies:
You leave the SIN spot blank and just put down her name and her income for
the year - US converted to Canadian Dollars. Do NOT put yourself on the
voter's list and do NOT apply for the GST credit. Remember to fill in Form
T1161 is you are leaving any assets in Canada or had any that you took with
you. (we have a deemed departure tax).
Put down that you left Canada on Dec 31 because you had no income after that
and will get larger personal exemptions (legally under the extended meaning
of a resident section).
For the US, you will file a joint return with your wife and exempt your
income on form 2555.
If you need help, that is what I do. 1/2 of our clients do NOT live in
Canada let alone Vancouver.
This year would likely be easier to have us do it instead of trying to train
a local. Doing it properly can save several thousand dollars on the US
return assuming your wife has an income of over $30,000 US.
