us taxes not filed for years - David

QUESTION:
I am a Canadian non-resident in the UAE. In 1990 a friend of mine applied
for US citizenship on the basis of his father's former US citizenship and
was granted it. Since my history was similar, I did the same, recieved a
passport but did nothing with it. It expired several years ago. I was
advised when I was in Canada that it was not necessary to file in the US,
and since I have never lived there, I didn't. When we came to the Gulf seven
years ago, I was told that you didn't need to file if your income was below
the foreign earnings amount. Now I have been told that I need to file, and
that by not filing I have lost the foreign earnings exemption. Is this true?
Any suggestions>
Thank you

david ingram replies:
When you got your passport based upon your father's citizenship, you should
have received a notice telling you to file 6 years of back US returns.
I have likely brought 30 people a year up to date for the last 30 years.
Not one has been penalized for late filing.
I would be glad to look after 1999 to 2005 for you.
An advantage of filing the US returns is that it makes it 10 times harder
for Canada to try and tax you while in the UAE.
