QUESTION:
I am a Canadian and a tour bus driver. Frequently I cross the border while
working for a Canadian bus company by now I have been asked by a US bus
company to drive some tours for them. Some of these tours start in Canada
but most of them start in the US and travel up into Canada (Rockies, mainly)
then back into the US to finish. Just in general terms, would you say it
would be worth my while to look at this invitation seriously since it likely
requires US working visa, etc. and bus drivers are not notoriously well
paid, so would the time and expense likely be justifiable? If you select my
question for answer please omit my name from any publication since, while a
common name, I still would not want to risk alerting the company I have been

Back in the seventies, Joe Lewis and I used to have several buses and planes
a month take tours to Reno, Vegas and Disneyland from Vancouver under the
name of CEN-TA Tours. We chartered our buses through Bud Cole at Maverick
Coach Lines most of the time. Back then, a bus driver could get a visa
fairly easy. But not today.
If you were to be an owner operator and buy your bus for mostly cash, you
could likely get an E2 visa which would allow you to operate your OWN bus.
Otherwise, there is no logical visa available for you to go and work as a
bus driver.
On the other hand Tauck tours (
http://www.tauck.com/?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=PAIDINC_VW ) has been very
successful in getting H1 Visas for Canadians to work as tour Guides in the
USA and all over the rest of the world.
It could be that you could "be the tour guide" and have to move a bus once
in a while, just not the full time driver.
One of my own family is a specialist truck driver in over height, over wide,
over long loads where they even have a driver on the end of the LOOOOONNNNG
trailer to steer the back wheels to get around corners like an old fire
truck hook and ladder.
For the life of me, we could not figure out how to get him a visa to work in
the states.
Anyone have any ideas for 2006 for my bus driver questioner?
