Part II - How to renew a TN Visa

Thanks to Andrew Nelson for this important correction. Of course, you need
an I-129 That is for the principal applicant and the reason for the larger
fee than at the border where the I-129 is not needed.
cut and paste replies sometimes get mixed up.
Again, Thanx Andrew.

If one is renewing their TN by mail, or even getting a first one while
in another status in US, one MUST MUST MUST file an I-129.
Simply sending in the documents you listed (which would be fine if
renewing at the border) will get these kicked back with a rejection.
I-129 for TN
I-539 for TD.

QUESTION:
Hi,
I've heard you can renew a TN visa by mail but I am unable
to find any information on how to do so. Could you point
me in
the right direction? Also what forms/documents are
needed? What is the cost? If I renew my visa by mail, do I
have to cross the border and come back?
Thanks,

david ingram replies:
The USCIS is currently processing TN renewals that were submitted May
16th.
That's about 125 days. THERE IS NO APPLICATION FORM - It is done by
letters
and documents, just as your application was processed at the border at
the
start.
There are 4 pages of good information about processing cases at:
http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/services/factsheet/howdoi/f_english.qxd.pd
f
You can always view what the current processing time is on
https://egov.immigration.gov/cris/jsps/Processtimes.jsp?SeviceCenter=Neb
rask
a
The USCIS requires:
*	your resume,
*	certified copy of your passport
*	certified copy of the front and back of your I-94,
*	certified copy of your degree,
*	certified copy(ies) of any other certifications for your
profession.
*	job offer from employer stating the job is for a year or less
*	A good description of your employer.
-------------
This is all sent to the USCIS at:
P.O. Box 82521
Lincoln, NE 68501-2521
Please note that the Nebraska Service Center, located in Lincoln,
Nebraska
is a regional processing facility adjudicating applications and
petitions
for a number of states. All questions for the Nebraska Service Center
must
be directed to that office.
---------------------
How Much Does It Cost?
TN workers who cross the border pay $50, plus $6 for the I-94 card.
Dependents pay only for the card(s).
Extensions which are submitted to the INS Service Center in Lincoln,
Nebraska cost $185 for TN principals, and $120 for any number of
dependents
(require an I-539 as well).
Checks may be personal or institutional, written by the applicant or his
employer, and should be made payable to "Immigration and Naturalization
Service."

Phone consultations are $400 for 15 minutes to 50 minutes (professional
hour).
This is not intended to be definitive but in general I am quoting $800
to
$2,000 for a dual country tax return.
$800 would be one T4 slip one W2 slip one or two interest slips and you
lived in one country only - no self employment or rentals or capital
gains -
you did not move into or out of the country in this year.
$1,000 would be the same with one rental
$1,200 would be the same with one business no rental
$1,200 would be the minimum with a move in or out of the country. These
are
complicated because of the back and forth foreign tax credits. - The IRS
says a foreign tax credit takes 1 hour and 53 minutes.
$1,500 would be the minimum with a rental or two in the country you do
not
live in or a rental and a business and foreign tax credits no move in
or
out
$2,000 would be all of the above and you moved in and out of the
country.
This is just a guideline for US / Canadian returns
We will still prepare Canadian only (lives in Canada, no US connection
period) with a three or four slips and no capital gains, etc. for
$125.00
up.
With a Rental for $300
A Business for $300 - Rental and business likely $400
And an American only (lives in the US with no Canadian income or filing
period) with about the same things in the same range with a little bit
more
if there is a state return.
Moving in or out of the country or part year earnings in the US will
ALWAYS
be $400 and up.
TDF 90-22.1 forms are $25 for the first and $10.00 each after that when
part
of a tax return.
8891 forms are generally $50.00 to $100.00 each.
18 RRSPs would be $900.00 - (maybe amalgamate a couple)
Capital gains *sales) are likely $50.00 for the first and $20.00 each
after
that.
Just a guideline not etched in stone.
