I'm still very confused about the circumstances under which people can
become dual citizens.
I'm a Canadian Citizen living and working in the US as a permanent resident.
I would consider taking American citizenship as long as I don't have to give
up my Canadian citizenship.
Does the United States require new citizens to renounce other citizenships?
Does it count if I renounce with my fingers crossed behind my back?

You are free to apply for and accept US citizenship.
the only negative would be that if you do decide to return to Canada, you
would have to file a US tax return every year for the rest of your life.
However, judging from your occupation, it would undoubtedly be an advantage
for you to be a US citizen rather than a Resident Alien.
