Hi David,
I have quick question about medical expenses that I paid for my parents.
This the case, My parents came to Canada on November 2001 with Visitors Visa, My Mom had a heart attack on December 29, 2001 without any insurance so I ended up paying for all the bills and drugs since then. On May 2001 I sent a sponsorship application for them to get an Immigration done and I am sponsoring them, They are living with me and I am paying for everything. It's over a year I'm waiting for the immigration papers...
Now the question: How can write off the medical expenses. Can I claim them as my depended and / or Caregiver expenses..
They are 63 and 64 years old.
I live in Canada
Thanks for your help
Regards

This is tricky because a lot of it depends upon how much your parent's income is and usually depends upon whether it is considered adequate in the country they live in.
The second question involves their degree of disability.
Hweverf, we can assume that they are now "tax" residents of Canada becaue of their time here. For 2002, you can claim them as dependents if they can be classified as disabled. You need a doctor's certificate (a T2201) signed for each of them in order for them to qualify.
Although a heart attack may have disabled your mother for a couple of months, it is not likely that a heart atack would qualify her as disabled in and of itself.
The disability or impairment which can be sight, mobility, hearing or even mental has to be expected to last for a period of MORE than a year. You can see the T2201 form at: http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t2201/t2201-02e.pdf. If a doctor will sign this form for either of your parents, you can claim that parent as an exemption amount, you can claim their medical expenses and you can claim the caregiver amount.
Once they turn 65, you get to claim without the disability certificate.
