1. Can we move all furniture to Canada
Yes, there is no problem bringing your furniture to Canada. To keep the CCRA happy, you should have owned the furniture for more than a year. If you decide to buy a big screen TV a week before the move, you can expect to pay duty on the TV.
2. Are we entiled to any medical benefits.
You would apply for provincial medical coverage within a day or two of your arrival. After 90 days, it should become effective.
3. Can we purchase a home.
As many as you can afford; a ski cabin at Whistler, a Watefront cabin on Saltspring Island and a downtown condo at the same time. However, only one of them can be free of capital gains tax and you cannot deduct mortgage interest easily in Canada although ANYONE who wants to let me re-arrag
ge their affairs CAN make mortgage interest deductible in Canada. (goto www.centa.com click on newsletters, click on 2001, click on November for information on how to do this).
4. Do we have to return back to the US every six months.
No, if your wife sponsors you as a Permanent resident, you do not ever need to leave Canada. However, as a US citizen, you ARE required to continue to file a US tax return while living in Canada. Goto www.centa.com, click on US/Canada Tax for the rules that will apply to you while living here.
