I am a 53 year old Canadian born male, married with an 12 year old daughter. My family and I have always enjoyed travelling to the United States, mostly Washington State - Bellingham, Seattle etc.
In 1996 I was denied entry to the U.S. because of my criminal record which included a possession of marijuana charge from my early twenties and impaired driving.
I applied for, and received a U.S. Waiver. My waiver said "good indefinitely, unless revoked" I never had any problems at the border using my waiver.
In 2002, I received a pardon for my criminal record.
In June of 2003 I was trying to cross the border at Lynden, Wa. My waiver was revoked for no apparent reason (9/11 was the only excuse I was given) I was denied entry, and told to apply for a new waiver, a process that can take as long as a year and a half.
I work as a truck driver and a limousine driver. I also work on some small marketing projects. Every once in a while I do have to go the U.S. on business but most of my cross border travel is for pleasure.
I have been sober for almost 7 years now, and I have not smoked pot since I was in my early twenties.
I have nothing but respect for the United States.
Is there anything I can do?
Yours, LXXXXX

There is nothing you can do at the moment. After Sept 11, 2001, all permanent waivers that had been issued were cancelled. At the moment there is no method to solve your problem other than to go through the annual waiver process which is tedious, time confusing, expensive, and embarrassing.
If you have an application in the works for a waiver and have an important reason that you have to be in the US, you can apply for an advance parole for a single crossing at any Port of Entry. It is my experience that they are generally issued. However, you should have an application for a waiver in the system before you apply for an advance parole.
This is subject to daily changes.

I am putting this out to a newslist just in case something new has come along in the last couple of months and I have missed it.
