QUESTION:
I am looking to buy a home in Canada. What do I need to know when purchasing
a home in Canada? Want to use it for extended vacations throughout the year.

I presume you are going to head across the bridge at Port Huron and buy in Ontario.
There ae no negatives that IO know of.  You can come to Canada without hindrance if you have no criminal or DUI convictions.
If you do, you will need to deal with the DUIO at eh border with a fee of about $400.00 to have it waived.  It is a much better and sane system than the very expensive and time consuming process (over a year) for a Canadian to get the same courtesy to the USA.
When you sell some time in the future, you will pay tax to Canada on any capital gains earned.  You will also have to report the profit in the US and teh US will give you credit for the tax paid to Canada by filling in a form 1116 and filing it with your 1040.
The goof news is that the property tax paid to Canada AND any mortgage interest you pay can be used as a part of your itemized deductionson your Michigan and your US 1040 tax returns.  Hope this helps.
