QUESTION:
I am a Canadian citizen, and I wish to enter the USA, in order to visit a
friend for a couple of weeks. I have a birth certificate, social insurance
card, health card, and a student ID card (shows my picture, but not my
birthday). I was wondering if I need to obtain a passport or some other
kind of picture ID in order to enter the USA, or is the ID that I have good
enough.

A passport is NOT required to enter the United States but it sure makes the process easier. Do yourself a favour and get one. Applications can be picked up at any post office.
I also suggest that you take with you:
a copy of your student registration at school or University or other education proving that you are going to school in Canada.
a letter form your employer (if any) stating that you are on a two week vacation and will be returning to work at:_____________
a copy of your tenancy agreement for your residence. Obviously, if you live at home, you will not have one but if you do, a letter form your parents stating that you live at their address and are expected home on ____________________________
a copy of your phone bill if you have a phone
a copy of your electric/utilities bill if you have one.
These all prove that you "live" in Canada and lead the Homeland Security person at the border to believe that you are not trying to sneak intot eh USA to work and live illegally. If the friend happens to be a fiancee, it si better to forget that tidbit at the moment.
