QUESTION: I'm a US citizen and I've been verbally
offered a job in Vancouver. It's a dream job--for the soul, that is--but it'd require a
huge pay cut (I'd be making CAN$30K tops). I've got a four-year
university degree, 12 years professional experience as an editor/reporter/writer/
technical writer (all titles which could apply for the offered job), English fluency,
and I'm single. While my skills aren't listed on the NAFTA job list, my self-
assessment rank was 87.
My question: I don't have a lot of money saved to prove I can support myself. Is this necessary?
How long can I work in Canada with a temporary visa, if I have to go this route?
Immigration from the States seems nearly impossible for a guy like me. Any
thoughts? Thanks in advance.

david ingram replies:
It is logical that you can get in as an immigrant or come as a temporary worker and make an effort to convert after arrival.
It will not happen soon though. Journalists were originally on the FTA list which became the NAFTA list but taken off in 1990 or 1991.
.Your potential employer has to start the process if you are just wanting to come and work, However you would be better off in the long run is you were to immigrate on your own. A score of 87 is almost a slam-dunk.
And it is taking from 12 to 18 months to get through as an immigrant as opposed to three months for work authorization and one day under NAFTA.
Immigration from the US is pretty easy for a guy like you,.
