Paying taxes to more than one state or Province

I?m not sure who to contact on this question, I get different answers depending on who I talk to. I?m a computer consultant that travels and last year the company I work for said that they have to take state taxes out of my paycheck for work I've perform in each of the states I was in. Which means this year I will have to fill out state taxes for 3 states, Michigan, where I live, Pennsylvania and West Virginia where I worked. Is this right? If it is right what happened to the words ?taxation without representation?, because I cannot vote in those states and I have no access to whatever benefits people living there may get

43 States have income tax return requirements and the three you mention all have tax returns. If you had worked in Alaska or Nevada or Florida or Texas there would not have been any requirement for a state tax return but you would be paying Michicgan tax anyway. as it is, you will pay tax to Pennsylvania on your PA earnings and tax to West Virginia (my sister lives in Wheeling WV) on your WV earnings and then claim a credit for those taxes on your Michigan tax return. Be sure to attach a copy of the PA and WV tax returns to your Michigan return and do not forget to claim those taxes as part of your itemized deductions.
Don't feel bad though. When we do a professional athlete's tax return for a team like the grizzlies or the Raptors or the Canucks, it is not unusual for us to prepare tax returns for 23 states, every state the player played basketball in.
And, when we prepare tax returns for US resident employees of Air Canada, we have to break up each flight and credit half of each flight's pay to teh province the plane took off form and the other half to the province the pay landed in.
As for representation, Are you really getting representation for your home state now?
