BANKRUPTCY Tax Situation- Messy divorce - Possible

Hi David,
I need help. After a very messy divorce, a downturn in the market which virtually wiped me out, and some very hefty personal problems which prevented me from working, have amassed into forming a very large tax burden that I don't seem to be able to get out of. The amount is approximately $150,000 CDN, and it is owed to CCRA. I have a home which, if I sold, could pay out all of my other debts, leaving only CCRA to deal with. But that still is hefty. How can I get out of this, without claiming bankruptcy? My job might look very down at me if I do, and I most likely will lose it, so I really don't want to claim bankruptcy. How did this character George Radwanski ( the Privacy Commisioner who owed $600,000) get out of paying his debt owed to CCRA for 10% of the amount? Write me back and let me know. By the way, I live in Toronto, so I hope someone can help me in this province.

Believe it, I do know how you feel. Have just received my discharge (Jan 2004) from a $4,800,000 CCRA income tax bill and am now in the middle of a messy and stupid divorce and fighting over a house I have lived in since 1969.
You have mentioned losing your job but that is not necessary. Doctors, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, Dentists, and other professionals go bankrupt and do not lose their designations. I kept my real estate licence through the procedure.
What you need to do is make a proposal and what you need is a person working on your side. A bankruptcy trustee does NOT work for you. A bankruptcy trustee that "you" choose is working for your creditors as soon as you sign the paperwork.
You need a bankruptcy lawyer like Murray Morrison in Surrey, BC. (604) 930-9013 www.morrocolaw.ca.
Murray was on my side and was a reassuring voice on the end of the phone when I needed a shoulder to lean on.
Give him a call and get a referral for someone like him in Toronto. Talk to the lawyer first. Get your rights lined up. Then contact a bankruptcy trustee and make a proposal to pay off "x" cents on the dollar. But call Murray first.
Hope this helps and good luck.
If you need a second shoulder to lean on, feel free to call me as well. I've been there.
PS: George Radwanski made a proposal which was accepted.
