QUESTION:
Hello I am a recently graduated RN in Ontario. I am planning on working in
the US my current job offers are from Tx, Az and Nm. Will I be required to
pay full Canadian and American income tax on all american earnings? How does
this work?
Thank you
Ixxxxxxxx

david ingram replies:
I assume you are going on an H1A or TN visa and are single. When you cross the border to live and work in the USA, you are a departing Canadian. Your Canadian return will show this on the top of Page one and you will pro-rate your exemptions in Canada based up on the number of days you are actually in Canada.
In the US, you will file your Federal 1040 and a State Tax return. NM and AZ have a state tax return, Texas does not.
If you have left and intend to stay for a while, your US earnings are not taxable in Canada.
On the other hand, if you are not intending to leave and are only planning on going for six or nine months or even thirteen months, your US income would be taxable in Canada.
