QUESTION:
Hi,
I am a Canadian Citizen moved to NH (USA) in August last year. Which form(s) do I need to submit? Thanks for your cooperation.
==============================================================================
david ingram replies:
You will have to file a departing Canada T1 return. This means that your personal exemption amounts will be prorated byt he num,ber of days you actually lived in Canada.
If you moved from Quebec, you will also have to file a departing Quebec Return.
New Hampshire does not have a state income tax return unless you are self employed.
Next you will file a (likely) blank 1040NR dual status statement and a 1040 Dual status return.
Depending upon your marital status, you might decide to report your world income and file a joint return reporting your Canadian income and claiming a foreign tax credit.
It has to be done both ways to determine what is "cheaper".
If in doubt, file a 4868 automatic extension today (April 15th) and then put it all in an envelope and send it to us in West Vancouver, BC. We specialize in returns just like yours.
You can find form 4868 here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-fill/f4868.pdf
Note that it does not even need a signature. Just make sure it is postmarked by midnight April 15, 2004.
Mail yours to:
