QUESTION:
I am Canadian, my wife is American. We have one daughter who is almost =
two years old and another one on the way. Just wondering as to how we =
establish their American citizenship, what forms we need, where to get =
them, any fees involved, etc. Any information on this would be greatly =
appreciated.
Thanks,

You should just apply for a US passport for your two year old and for a =
US passport for the next child as well. =20
In other cases, the Child Citizenship Act of 2001 goes a little further =
and a US consular answer from:
http://www.usemb.gov.do/Consular/ask/U.S.%20Citizenship%20and%20Children%=
20of%20Citizens.htm
is reproduced here.
      Ask The Consul =96 OCTOBER 14, 2002
U.S. Citizenship and Children of Citizens
Is your child a United States citizen if born out of the country? =
Will your child become a citizen automatically on the day that he or she =
enters the United States? In many cases, U.S. citizen parents with =
children born outside the U.S. may be surprised to learn that the answer =
is yes.
The Child Citizenship Act of 2000, or CCA 2000, became effective =
on February 27, 2001, greatly simplifying the process by which =
foreign-born children of United States citizens can become U.S. citizens =
if they did not acquire citizenship at birth. To obtain citizenship =
under these circumstances, there are three requirements that must be met =
under CCA 2000:
1.. One parent is a U.S. citizen, whether by birth or =
naturalization. This applies to biological parents and legal adoptive =
parents, but not to stepparents acquired through the marriage of a =
parent.=20
2.. The child is under 18 years of age.=20
3.. The child resides with and is in custody of the U.S. citizen =
parent after having entered the U.S. as a legal permanent resident.=20
Also, if the child is adopted, the adoption must be final.
Children who met all the requirements of CCA 2000 and were under =
18 on February 27, 2001 automatically became citizens on that date. =
Those already over 18 on that date do not qualify under the Act. =
Therefore, after February 27, 2001, any child who fulfills all the =
requirements of CCA 2000 becomes a U.S. citizen on the date the last =
requirement was met. =20
Children who meet the requirements of CCA 2000 do not need to =
apply to the Immigration and Naturalization Service for naturalization. =
They do not need to complete any forms, nor pay any special fees. There =
is no waiting period required and no certificate is issued. If parents =
choose, they may apply for a U.S. passport for their children through =
the usual process, showing proof of the parent-child relationship (birth =
certificate or adoption decree), proof of entry as a legal permanent =
resident (passport with I-551 stamp or green card), and the parent=92s =
identification and proof of citizenship (passport or birth certificate =
or naturalization certificate).
