Canadian working in Canada and living in Pt.Roberts

We have been thinking about potentially buying in Pt.Roberts and living there, while maintaining our jobs in Canada.
The cost of realestate seems better over there, however with all things being equal are there any advantages or disadvantages you know of for doing this? (taxes,...?)
Are there any limits on how long we can live in Pt.Roberts(U.S.) as a Canadian?
Do we need any special visas to live in the U.S. if we are working in Canada?
Our kids are going to a private school, so school zoning is not a problem.
Are there any other issues you can think of for a residence in the U.S. for a Canadian.(car insurance, mortgage? from Canadan or U.S. banks)
Essentially we are fed up with poor school quality, medical quality, over taxing, and housing costs in BC. We are the middle upper income bracket($120k) and a large portion of our income is taken away in taxes. We do not own a business and therefore have minimal tax exemptions.
We love BC for the geography but it is too high a price. We can barely afford private school for our 2 kids but it was a high priority for them due to the low quality of the local schools, we are willing to do anything we can to insure they have a good education. The only thing next is a way to get reasonable medical care, but one step at a time.
Thank you very much for any help,

David Ingram replies:
I presume you are the XXXX XXXXXXX who worked in Alaska. I am only answering this because I remember our marathon session to figure that one out. However, I am afraid you are out of luck with your desire to move to Point Roberts.
There is no easy way for you to buy and live in Point Roberts if you do not have a visa to work there. You cannot get a visa to live there and work in Canada in less than about 14 years.
And the cost of your US medical will make up for the cost of housing. Your BC Medical and employer extended benefits do NOT cover you if you are living in Point Roberts.
Moving to Point Roberts and continuing to work in Canada will leave your tax liability to Canada the same and you will likely run into alternative Minimum Tax in the USA if your income is over $50,000 US which it has to be if you are sending your children to a Private school.
You really need to rethink your decision. It is not practical in my opinion.
If you are that concerned, apply for jobs in Bellingham and move to the US lock stock and barrel. That will decrease your tax bill and you will be someplace that you can live and shop and exist rather than be in a bedroom Community where you have to go through two borders to buy a US refrigerator.
