Maintaining PR status in Canada - Canadian citizenship

-----Original Message-----

QUESTION: I am a Canadian (sounds like a commercial).
My wife is a US citizen. We have 2 children
who were born in Canada and have dual
citizenship. I'm faculty at a Canadian
University and will be on sabbatical July 1,
2005 - June 30, 2006. We will all be going to
England for the year, where I will be working
at a University there. My wife, who is a
permanent resident of Canada, applied for
Canadian citizenship on October 1 2004 but
she has not yet been assigned a case number.
We are wondering if her citizenship application
has not been processed by July 1, 2005 (which
seems very likely the way things are done) is
there a way for her to get special permission to
go to England for the year (July 1, 2005 -
June 30, 2006) and (a) not lose her PR status
and (b) put her citizenship application on hold
until her return?

david income replies:
Your wife is home free. To maintain her status as a PR, your wife must be
in Canada 36 out of 60 months.
To apply for citizenship, she must have been physically in Canada for three
out of the last four years.
If she was leaving Canada for a LOOONNNGG Time, she should apply for a
returning resident permit but she does not need one for a year.
