Subject: an extension to file a tax return
Dear David,
I have been reading the information on your website and it is
very informative. I have a question that I did not see you
address.
I am a tax preparer in San Jose, CA and I had a new client in my
office today with a variety of questions. Most relating to tax
planning. He finished our meeting with “I filed an extension for
my 2004 tax return and I also need to file a Canadian return. I
worked for five months in British Columbia and can Canadian
returns be extended? I didn’t know and pledged to find out and
all my usual sources are not available to me today. Can you help
me?
If you can file extension, I would need form # etc. or would
it be easier to have someone in your office work with the client
directly? Please let me know.
I will look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
xxxxx CPA's

david ingram replies:
Canada does NOT have an extension process. If your client was
self employed, or his or her spouse is self employed, the due
date is automatically June 15, 2005 for a 2004 return.
The best method if you do not have all the information is to file
a pro-forma return. Get it in the mail with the information you
have and mark it PRO-FORMA.
If you do not have a return, you can find one at:
 http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/formspubs/t1general/nonresidents-e.html
I would be glad to look after it for you if you fax the Canadian
documents to me at (604) 980-0321
