I am a returning non resident (Hong Kong 9 yrs). Do I
have to stay out of Canada until after I get my last
pay check in Hong Kong (with holidays I could home
earlier). Also my return of pension contributions will
take 2 months after that date. Again, do I need to
stay out of Canada to avoid tax? Or can I come home
and later just before the money arrives just pop down
into the states and then declare my re-entry from that
trip as the date that I have returned to Canada for
tax purposes?

The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) will usually try and tax money
received after returning to Canada. I cannot begin to tell you
how many times I have had clients taxed at higher Canadian rates
after pulling their IRA's or 401(K) accounts out just after
returning to Canada from the USA.
A tax free or lower tax zone is even worse.
Don't come back to Canada until you have all your money in hand.
Sounds like a great time to take a 60 day vacation in the Greek
Isles or how about a trip across the Australian Outback - visit
Ayers Rock and Perth and Darwin. (I saw Sydney, Melbourne and
Brisbane and the Gold Coast but missed the great trek.) I have a
really silly one from Algeria right now as well.
Spark your company up to get the cheques to you sooner rather
than later.
