question is , can you write off the loan to purchase a boat ?

In Canada, section 18(l) specifically forbids the interest to buy
a boat or a hunting lodge.
However, most people in Canada in the position to buy a boat
where interest is significant can arrange their affairs to make a
loan deductible.
GOTO www.centa.com and click on the November 2001 newsletter in
the top left box. It will give you several ideas on how to do it.
In the US, one just raises a mortgage on a house and uses the
interest on the house as a deduction on schedule A. This will
work as long as the loan does not exceed the original purchase
price of the boat. If the loan does exceed the original purchase
price, the loan can be made deductible by following techniques in
the November 2001 newsletter mentioned above.
