US citizen filing Canadian taxes

QUESTION:
Hi there, Thanks for all of your good information, but I have one question
which never seems to come up. If as a US citizen I do live in Canada for
more than 6 months of the year and I am required to file Canadian taxes on
my worldwide income, how do I get a tax identification number or social
insurance number if I am not applying for citizenship or landed immigrant
status? I assume I need a number under which to file, but if I am not
trying to become a full time resident of Canada, what do I do? I understand
I must file in the US of course as usual, but if I live in Canada for more
than 6 months in any year, how do I file my Canadian taxes as required? I
do not work in Canada.
Thank you again for helping me with this question.

david ingram replies:
Do these all the time. Just file your tax return with no number. The CRA
will write back with a letter telling you that you need a number. Then you
take "that" letter to your local Government office and they will accept your
application. Sometimes, you might have the CRA issue a temporary number to
you - if so, it will start with a zero.
If you need help with the returns, let me know.
