QUESTION:
My husband and I are Canadian Citizens and he is accepting a job with an oil
company to work in Achorage Alaska. My question is,
1. will I be able to work in Alaska?
2. What would I require for a work visa?
3. Can I take Univerisity or College level courses?
4. Can I engage in volunteer activities.
5. Can I become a member of the Big Sister Society?
Thank-you in advance for any information you may be able to provide to me.

david ingram replies:
1.	Not without a visa
2.	as a rule, you would only qualify for a professional position. You will
NOT be able to get a visa to work as a clerk in a store or as a bookkeeper
as an example. Goto www.centa.com and click on "Entering the USA" in the
second box down on the right hand side for examples of visas.
3.	Yes, but the University has to get you a student visa first.
4.	Not usually unless there are NO paid people in the organization.
5.	You can certainly become a member but you can not volunteer for any
position that they would pay someone to perform if you were not there. And
be careful. I had a fellow lose his visa because his wife was volunteering
at a museum and was allowing them to work without having to pay someone to
perform her services. The silly part here was that the wife had a degree
that qualified her for her own TN status.
Happy New Year - look at the time.
