US Green Card holder, Canadian and UK Citizen - international non-resident cross border income tax help estate family trust assi

Morning David,
Just read your article of working in Canada and living in the states and
taxes and much more. Thought it was really useful. Noticed it was written
2001 ish and some references to the 90"s wondered if much had changed?
I am a Canadian citizen and a US green card holder. So is my wife. I have
just been offered a job in Vancouver as Dean Fairleigh Dickinson University
- BC. A US based university with a satellite campus in BC.
Based on what I have read I shall have to submit a tax return in Canada and
the US and claim a tax credit in the US for taxes paid in Canada?
I was wondering though if I could continue to reside (go home every night to
US..Point Roberts or Blaine (houses are better value) in the US and work in
Canada or would it really be better in the long run to live in Canada?
Any adviec appreciated. ty

david ingram replies:
If you have no intention of becoming an American, staying in the US is not a
bad idea.
You will save on housing but lose with medical, having to pay anywhere from
$4,000 to %12,000 a year to buy your own medical because neither BC Medical
or UBC medical will apply to you because you have to sleep in BC more than
183 days a year to qualify for both.
You will NOT save 1 cent in Income tax unless you have a spouse who has US
income.
Even though Point Roberts is a possibility, I recommend that you live in the
Blaine area instead if you opt for the US side.
You only sleep in Point Roberts, you do not really live there because there
is no real infrastructure of stores, doctors, etc.
So! You do not save on tax and it costs you more for medical and commuting.
However, I recommend that you live in the US long enough to qualify for your
US citizenship and then move to Canada. Then you are free to move back and
forth among the EU, US and Canada at will, if you wish without having to
start all over. Your career shows a lot of moves and filing I-131 forms does
not guarantee that your US resident alien cards will be kept alive while
living in Canada. As I se it, you have moved at least from the UK to Canada
to the UK to the US to Singapore to Michigan and California means that you
do not want to give up any possibilities.
Nothing has changed since 2001 and I have left that version to make the
point that 9/11 has not changed anything.
Of course, when you do arrive, you know where to get the tax returns for
both countries prepared.
