I do have a letter from them giving me permission to work, but it was never up-dated. I was married to an American Citizen at the time. I would like someone in your firm to handle my Claims for Social Security benefits when i turn 62 years.. in 2010. I also have a substantial amount of money in a 401K , and don;t want to mess that up. Will you help me? You will need a lawyer who is currently licenced to operate in the US and in particular, one who is prepared to take it to court if necessary. In my opinion, it was actually Republican legislation that Republican candidate Bob Dole (it was an election year) expected Clinton to refuse to sign because of its draconian measures. Instead, Clinton signed it and used it as a "positive" for the rest of the campaign leaving Dole in the dust. One of the provisions of the bill was that one had to prove they were legally in the US when it came time to collect their Social Security benefits. However, that provision was defeated on May 18, 2006 when the Senate passed another bill which allowed persons who worked illegally and contributed to Social Security to collect it. However, it was NOT a resounding pass. The vote was 50 in favour and 49 against ((44 Republicans and 5 democrats). THE FUTURE??? However, with a Democratic Congress and a Democratic Senate at the moment, it is unlikely to be changed in the near future. You should collect your pension without the need for a lawyer.
