My question is: Canadian-specific QUESTION: My husband recently passed away and left a $360,000.00 RIFF to his 14 year old daughter. She was listed on the RIFF as beneficiary. Who pays the taxes on this ? Are they paid when the RIFF is re-registered, or cashed or now or what ? Thanks ----------------------------------------------------------------- --------- david ingram replies: If, as you say the 14 year old daughter is named as a beneficiary she, as a dependent child or grandchild (who is under age 18 at the time). can buy an annuity which pays out from now until her 18th birthday. This spreads the taxation over 3 or 4 years at much lower income tax rates than if the estate had to pay the tax on it at one swipe in the 44% income tax range. The annuity MUST be acquired before the she is 18 and within sixty days following the year the in which the RRIF proceeds are received. She can receive the payments from the annuity directly or by a trust set up solely for her benefit.
